Resident Evil Requiem Review: Both Cameras, One Very Good Game

Requiem is the most confident Resident Evil since RE2 Remake, and the camera toggle turns out to be the least interesting thing about it.

Verdict

Capcom's tightest survival horror in years. The camera options are a nice headline; the pacing and the encounter design are the actual achievement.

Reviewed on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S

What we liked

  • Encounter pacing that never lets a room feel safe for long
  • Two camera modes that both genuinely work
  • Resource pressure that stays tense without becoming unfair

What we didn't

  • Inventory management is friction as often as it is tension
  • The middle act leans on backtracking

The camera toggle got the headlines. It is not why Requiem is good.

Pacing

Requiem’s real achievement is rhythm. It understands that horror is not constant pressure but the gap between pressures, and it spends that gap well — letting you think you have a safe room, then quietly taking it away.

Both cameras

First-person is the more frightening of the two and the more exhausting. Third-person is the more playable and the more forgiving. Neither is the “correct” mode, and the game is balanced well enough that both hold up across a full run.

Resources

Ammunition is tight without being punitive, and the game is honest about it: you can see what you are spending and what it costs you later.

Where it sags

The middle act sends you back through cleared space more often than it needs to. It is the one stretch where the pacing loosens.

Verdict

A confident, tightly-built survival horror that would still be excellent with one camera. Having two is a bonus, not the point.
